In determining the concentration of HCl by titrating against the primary weak base TRIS, the molarity of HCL is calculated using the following equation
where GFW is the gram formula weight of TRIS, which is 121.136 g/mol.
(a) Calculate the molarity of HCL and the maximum measurement error in the molarity if the mass of TRIS is 0.4487 grams, the initial volume of HCl is 0.03 mL, and the final volume of HCl is 37.86 mL. Assume maximum measurement errors of ±0.2 mg for the mass of TRIS, ±0.04 mL for each volume, and ±0.001 g for the GFW of TRIS.
(b) The procedure states that the amount of TRIS must be adjusted so that the titration takes more than 35 mL of HCl, but less than 50 mL of TRIS. Based on your answer to part (a), speculate on why these volume limits were chosen.
