A series of collaborative learning activities and accompanying text that develop the areas of molecular and atomic spectroscopy is provided. Chapters on basics of spectrophotometry, ultraviolet/visible absorption, molecular fluorescence, infrared, Raman and […]
c. UV/Vis
Students explore basic aspects of UV/Vis spectroscopy including effects of conjugation, non-bonding electrons and solvent on the observed spectrum. There is an associated text that explains the answers to the questions on the worksheet.
In this activity, students prepare a solution, record spectral data, and then complete several statistical analyses of the data.
A spectral dataset is provided and suggestions for activities to students explore are described.
[vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_column_text] Introduction This module provides a context for introducing fundamental techniques used in chemical analysis (spectrophotometry, atomic absorbance spectroscopy and ion selective electrodes) along with considerations about sampling and sample preservation. […]
Introduction The module is designed as a sequence of class activities and provides a set of experimental data (TEM images, size and size distribution analyses, and absorbance vs. concentration data) that can […]
Students will learn to:
Consider the effect of electronic structure on absorbance and fluorescence emission
Design experiments using absorbance and fluorescence
Compare calibration curves using absorbance and fluorescence
This card game was designed for review sessions before instrumental analysis exams. Students draw and discard cards, attempting to collect one from each suit that comprise a logical set of components for […]
